Rapid and accurate tracking of victims of a
mass casualty incident or disaster is essential. Incident and medical branch
managers must uniquely identify each victim, assign a triage status, and track
victims through treatment and transport - with all activities time & date
stamped. This information must be available on-scene for incident management,
off-scene for trauma center preparedness, and after-incident for full
accountability and a chain-of-custody.
medTRAX meets this challenge with
a simple, automated system featuring bar-coded triage tags, handheld computers
to capture data, a wireless LAN to consolidate victim data, and internet access
to make incident data available to downstream facilities in order to prepare for
incoming casualties. A “transport label” travels with the victim to provide
survivable data and a chain-of-custody. Only medTRAX tracks both victims and
responders at site.
medTRAX has three software modules to control and
automate the tracking of victims at the scene of a mass casualty incident:
-- PAS Mobile -- software is the primary data
capture software that resides on a scanner-enabled Pocket PC. Its function is to
scan a victim's triage tag and then enter the victim's triage priority,
assignment, and vitals (time permitting), as well as any ID information that can
be automatically stripped off the victim's driver’s license.
-- Victim Manager -- software resides on a laptop
at the medical command post and is used to consolidate and manage data that is
transferred (via wireless communications) from the Pocket PCs at site. Its
primary function is to graphically display the number, status, and assignments
of all victims at site – or in transport to a trauma center.
--
EMA Manager -- software (semi-custom) provides Internet
access whereby information can be sent from Victim Manager to a web-based
application so that remote facilities – such as a hospital or trauma center –
can view incident details including the number and type of victims being
transported to their facility.
medTRAX meets the requirements of the
Dept. of HLS 2005 Authorized Equipment List (AEL): Item 4.4 - Systems,
Operations Area Personnel Tracking and Accountability.
